I had purchased several "I Can Read" books when my boys were young, "(Pickles) The Fire Cat" was their favorite,I don't know why, but I started thinking about the book and looked it up, I purchased two copies to send to a grandson and to two of my great-grandchildren. Not only is this book easy to read, but it has a message that young ones pick up on. It is a great book that should be in every young child's library. It is a 'take to bed' book!
What a cute book. This book is about a stray cat named Pickles that used to be a jerk, but betters himself. It is a long book, but reads at a beginner level. My 6 year old was able to get through this without issue, it just takes a but due to it is a lot longer than other "I Can Read Level 1" books. The pictures are great, the book is funny, and it's cute. Great for all ages.
One of my treasured and favorite books as a child. I always regretted losing touch with this book. Then all of a sudden I see it for sale on Amazon.... What the? How awesome and unexpected for a book that is over (40+) years old. These beautifully illustrated older books are simple and always tell a needed life lesson. They are characters you never forget. And they are not completely morphed super crazy cartoon characters. The cat looks like a cat. And the firemen look like men. Crazy huh? This was a newer reprinted edition. Can't wait to share this story with the Grandkids!
The Fire Cat was one of my favorites while growing up, and I am so thankful that I am able to share it now with my children! As a ornery kid, the idea of actions not being the whole of who I am was such a welcome idea. Love this book, and this copy is excellent. Well made, and for a paperback book it is surprisingly sturdy. Highly recommended!
I read this book to my sons 20 years ago and always remembered it fondly. I thought about it recently and wondered if it was still available for my grand daughter. To my delight, I found it. It is a great story with a profound message. This "street" cat that couldn't make it on the domestic scene, took the love and attention it received from Mrs. Goodkind, and found its niche in the firehouse. We are all different. We are all a little good and a little bad. There is a place for us some where, at least for Pickles. He found his joy.
The notion of "Mrs. Goodkind" entered our family's language long ago, when my children loved this book.Don't think that that name makes it sweetish. It's a v. matter-of-fact tale of a cat who is not bad, but not good either, but wants to do big things, persists in trying to learn to become a good fire house cat, and ultimately manages to do so.Now it's my son's little girl who likes the book.
I remember reading this book when I was a child. I decided I had to have it to read to my grandchildren. Great little story that they can read by themselves later on.
Just as I remember. Gave it as a gift to a two and a half year old, she likes it.
